Medical Case Study Intussusception in a 7-Year-Old Persian Cat

Khun Furby, a 7-year-old Persian cat, was brought to the hospital after suffering from persistent vomiting for several days.

Upon diagnostic imaging via X-ray and Ultrasound, our veterinarians identified abnormal thickening and irregular motility in certain segments of the intestine. A detailed examination confirmed a diagnosis of Intussusception.

What is Intussusception?

Intussusception is a serious condition where one segment of the intestine telescopes into the lumen of an adjacent segment. This "sliding" can obstruct blood flow to the affected area, leading to tissue necrosis (cell death) or intestinal perforation, both of which are life-threatening. The primary treatment is surgical intervention, specifically Intestinal Resection and Anastomosis (removing the damaged section and reconnecting the healthy ends).

Common Causes

While it can stem from various issues, the most frequent causes include

  • Abnormal Intestinal Motility: Often caused by the ingestion of foreign bodies leading to an obstruction.
  • Gastrointestinal Inflammation or Infection: Chronic diarrhea or excessive straining (tenesmus) during defecation.
  • Neoplasia: Presence of masses, tumors, or intestinal cancer.
