Breathing Easier Soft Palate & Stenotic Nares Surgery for Brutus

Brutus, a 2-year-old French Bulldog, recently visited Dr. Darunrat due to chronic breathing difficulties. Like many brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds, Brutus suffered from Stenotic Nares (narrow nostrils), which severely impacted his quality of life, leading to exercise intolerance and heavy panting during daily activities.
Upon further evaluation, Dr. Darunrat recommended a dual surgical approach: Alar Fold Resection (Nose surgery) and Staphylectomy (Soft Palate surgery).

What is an Elongated Soft Palate?

This condition occurs when the soft tissue at the back of the roof of the mouth is too long, extending into the airway and obstructing the glottis (the opening to the lungs). This blockage prevents adequate oxygen intake and is considered a life-threatening condition.

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Choking or gagging
  • Chronic coughing or "reverse sneezing"
  • Stridor (noisy breathing) or difficulty catching breath
  • Exercise intolerance
  • Cyanosis: Pale or purple gums due to low oxygen levels
  • Fainting or collapse (in severe cases)

The Surgical Goal

While surgery may not entirely eliminate every respiratory sound, it is critical for preventing severe, life-threatening crises. It significantly reduces the effort required to breathe and improves the pet’s long-term health.
