Easily Tired, Panting, and Coughing? These could be signs of a heart problem

Myxomatous Mitral Valve Disease (MMVD) is one of the most common heart conditions in small-breed dogs, especially as they age. Breeds such as Chihuahuas, Poodles, and Pomeranians are particularly at risk. In this case, a 12-year-old Chihuahua was brought in after the family noticed symptoms like fatigue, panting, coughing, rapid breathing while lying down, a bluish tongue, and unexplained weight loss. A thorough examination revealed that the dog had mitral valve disease, with an enlarged heart and fluid buildup in the lungs, an early signs of heart failure.
The vet quickly began treatment with diuretics (to remove excess fluid) and heart-support medications, along with a long-term medication plan. After just one week, the dog’s breathing rate improved significantly. Now, seven months into care, little Data’s condition continues to steadily improve day by day.

Emergency signs that need urgent vet attention:
Vets recommend annual heart checkups, especially for small breeds and senior dogs. Early detection can slow the progression of heart disease and help your pet stay by your side longer.
