It’s hard to resist those 'puppy eyes' when your fur baby begs for a bite of your snack. However, sharing human food with your dog does more than just cause weight gain. Beyond the well-known risks of liver and kidney disease, human food—often high in sugar, salt, and fats—significantly increases the risk of Diabetes in pets. Protecting their health starts with a proper diet designed specifically for them.

In 2024, 'Mashi' was rushed to our hospital facing a life-threatening diabetic emergency. Symptoms included vomiting, extreme lethargy, loss of appetite, and severe weakness. Upon testing, Mashi’s blood sugar levels were critically high—a state that can be fatal if not treated immediately. Our medical team acted swiftly with a treatment plan involving fluid therapy and insulin to stabilize blood glucose levels. Today, Mashi has significantly improved and achieved healthy weight loss. However, it is important to remember that diabetes in pets cannot be cured; it can only be managed. Mashi continues to require a strict specialized diet alongside regular insulin injections. Routine blood tests are also essential to monitor and maintain stable glucose levels.
Keep a close eye on your fur babies. If you notice symptoms like sudden weight gain, increased hunger, excessive thirst, or frequent urination (more than 6-7 times a day)—or if you see ants attracted to their urine—please bring them in for a check-up immediately. Most importantly, remember that sharing human food with your pets significantly increases their health risks.
