Dystocia Alert

Every minute counts when nature needs a helping hand. Meet 'Mee Tang,' who struggled with natural labor at home. Despite her efforts, the delivery stalled due to a critical physical barrier: her pelvic canal was too narrow compared to the size of the puppies' heads—a common cause of Dystocia (difficult birth). Tragically, this delay led to the loss of one puppy during the natural labor attempt.

Recognizing the emergency, our veterinary team initiated an Emergency C-Section. We performed the surgery to safely deliver the remaining puppies and, to prevent future reproductive complications, also performed a spay (sterilization) on Mee Tang during the same procedure. We are relieved to report that Mee Tang and her surviving little ones are now safe, healthy, and recovering well.

Dystocia Alert Critical Warning Signs Your Pregnant Pet Needs Immediate Help

  1. Persistent, strong contractions for 30–60 minutes without the birth of a puppy or kitten.
  2. A gap of more than 4–6 hours between the delivery of each newborn.
  3. Body temperature drops below 99°F (37.2°C), but labor does not commence within 24 hours.
  4. Frequent licking of the genital area or cries of extreme pain during active labor without a birth occurring.
  5. No delivery within 1–2 hours after the amniotic sac (water) has ruptured.
  6. Pregnancy lasts more than 70 days from the first mating, or more than 60 days from the start of diestrus (post-estrus stage).

Close observation of your pregnant pet ensures that any abnormalities are detected early, leading to timely treatment and significantly reducing the risk of loss for both the mother and her litter.
