Facial Paralysis in Dogs... Because of 'Ear Inflammation'

Can you believe ear inflammation alone can cause facial paralysis? "Enzo," a 4-year-old Pug, arrived with an abnormally drooping right side of his face. This case was complex, and we must applaud the medical team for their collaborative diagnosis and treatment until he fully recovered.

Teamwork Treatment by the Specialist Team

  • Initial physical examination.
  • Referral to a Neurologist, who identified "Facial Nerve Paralysis."
  • Referral to a Dermatologist and Ear Specialist for a detailed ear canal inspection.
  • Finally, referral to an Ophthalmologist to treat corneal ulcers, as Enzo was unable to blink.

MRI results revealed: The dog had severe inflammation in the middle and inner ear, which is located near the nerves controlling the face. This caused the right side of his face to become immobile.

A Note for Pet Parents: Facial paralysis in dogs can occur due to several causes, such as accidents, certain infections, or ear inflammation in the middle and inner ear, just like in Enzo’s case. This results in symptoms like a drooping lip, drooling, sagging eyelids, and an inability to blink, which may be accompanied by dry or red eyes. Treatment involves providing nerve supplements along with treating concurrent conditions. Therefore, parents must closely observe their children's symptoms; if any abnormalities are found, please bring them to see a veterinarian as soon as possible.
