The birth of a new litter is an exciting time, but it can quickly become a crisis if labor stalls. Typically, a cat’s pregnancy lasts about two months. Once the amniotic fluid—or the 'water'—breaks, it's a signal that kittens are on the way. The Golden Hour Rule If the first kitten is not born within 1 hour of the water breaking, or if there is a gap of more than 1 hour between kittens, this is diagnosed as 'Dystocia' (difficult labor). Without immediate veterinary intervention, the kittens' lives are at high risk, and it can become life-threatening for the mother as well.
Meet 'Tiger,' who was rushed to our hospital after her water broke without progression. Our team performed an emergency C-section to ensure the safety of the entire litter. The surgery was successful, but the challenge didn't end there—initially, Tiger was hesitant to nurse, and the kittens struggled to latch.
Our 24-hour Nursery Team stepped in, providing round-the-clock care, including bottle-feeding every 2 hours and manual stimulation for waste elimination. Now, 20 days later, Tiger has fully embraced her motherhood, and her kittens are growing plump and healthy. Congratulations to the whole family!
