Dystocia (Difficult Labor): The Silent Danger for Pregnant Dogs!

We had an emergency case: a heavily pregnant dog named Amber. She tried to give birth at home on her own, but after several hours, no puppies had come out yet. Her worried owners rushed her in for an immediate examination! After checking the puppies' heart rates, the veterinarian decided an emergency C-section was needed right away. The surgery went smoothly -- Amber is safe, and all her puppies are healthy. They are now recovering and receiving close care from our nursing staff and veterinarians.

Dangers of Prolonged Difficult Labor

• Puppies may die in the womb from lack of oxygen
• The mother dog may lose a lot of blood, develop an infection, or become critically weak
• Risk of prolonged complications in the future

Signs to Watch For

• The mother dog strains for more than 30 minutes without the first puppy being born
• Amniotic fluid or blood comes out, but no puppy follows
• Only some puppies are born, then labor stops for more than 2 hours
• The mother dog becomes weak, lethargic, or stops straining
