Pyometra The Silent Threat to Female Dogs – Insights from Mei Lin’s Case

A routine check-up can be a life-saver. 'Mei Lin' recently visited us for her annual health exam. While she appeared normal, her blood work revealed an alarmingly high white blood cell count. With no other visible symptoms, our veterinarians performed an ultrasound, which led to a shocking discovery Mei Lin was suffering from Pyometra (uterine infection) accompanied by uterine cysts.

Pyometra is a serious condition where the uterine wall thickens, leading to a secondary bacterial infection from the vaginal tract. This life-threatening disease is most common in unspayed female dogs, senior dogs, or those that have previously received hormonal contraceptive injections. Regardless of the breed, the risk increases significantly as a dog ages, making early detection through regular screenings vital.

The Silent Warning Signs & Success Story

  • Lethargy and Loss of Appetite
  • Increased Thirst and Frequent Urination
  • Distended Abdomen

(possibly with discharge from the vaginal tract)

In Mei Lin’s case, our surgical team performed an emergency Ovariohysterectomy (removal of the uterus and ovaries) to prevent life-threatening complications. We are thrilled to share that Mei Lin has made a full recovery and is back to her energetic self at home!

This case is a powerful reminder that annual health check-ups are vital. Many diseases can be detected long before symptoms appear. Early diagnosis means timely treatment, ensuring your beloved companions stay healthy and by your side for years to come.
