Wayu was brought to our Cat Clinic after his owner noticed he was unusually quiet and began vomiting. During the physical exam, our veterinarians detected significant abdominal guarding and pain. An abdominal ultrasound was immediately performed, revealing a foreign body in the gastrointestinal tract and signs of peritonitis (abdominal inflammation).
Emergency surgery was required to remove the foreign object and perform an intestinal anastomosis (removing a damaged portion of the intestine and reconnecting it). Post-surgery, the culprit was identified: The fibrous root of the Indian Acalypha (Catnip/Tam-Yae-Maeow). In his state of euphoria while playing with the plant, Wayu had accidentally swallowed the entire root.
Please do not panic! Indian Acalypha itself is not toxic to cats. However, this case serves as a reminder to supervise your pets during playtime. If the roots are tough or long, they can become a dangerous physical obstruction if ingested.
With care and best wishes from "Thonglor Thong-Jai" – Thonglor Pet Hospital.
