Dogs Can Suffer from Acid Reflux.

Burp... The sound of a belch, followed by heartburn and a sour, acidic aftertaste—sounds familiar, doesn't it? Yes, these are the classic symptoms of acid reflux in humans. However, this condition isn't exclusive to us; dogs can also suffer from acid reflux.

Acid Reflux in Dogs

This condition occurs when a dog's stomach contracts in a way that forces undigested food and gastric acids back up into the esophagus and mouth. This backflow causes significant irritation and a burning sensation in the throat, much like the discomfort experienced by humans. This process is medically referred to as gastroesophageal reflux.

Symptoms of Acid Reflux in Dogs

  • Lethargy and Weakness
  • High Fever
  • Nasal Discharge and Coughing
  • Vomiting or Regurgitation
  • Swollen Throat
  • Bad Breath

Causes of Acid Reflux in Dogs

  • Esophageal Stricture
  • Toxic Ingestion
  • Megaesophagus
  • Foreign Body Obstruction
  • Throat or Esophageal Cancer
  • Genetic Predisposition
  • Esophageal Tumors

Treatment and Recovery

The veterinarian will conduct a thorough physical examination to prescribe appropriate medications for acid reflux. This process often includes a personalized dietary adjustment plan tailored to your dog's needs. If underlying conditions or concurrent illnesses are identified, the veterinarian will prioritize treating those primary issues first before specifically addressing the acid reflux symptoms to ensure the most effective recovery.
