No plant is currently trending more than 'Cannabis' following its legalization for cultivation and trade in Thailand. In veterinary medicine, there are reports of cannabis being used therapeutically to manage pain and control seizures in pets.

Cannabis vs. Catnip Don’t Get Confused! The cannabis currently in the spotlight is entirely different from the 'Catnip' we are familiar with. Catnip is a member of the mint family (Nepeta cataria), while the trending cannabis (Cannabis sativa indica) is an annual herbaceous plant. They differ completely in appearance, leaf structure, and biological effects.

Critical Precautions Owners must be extremely vigilant, particularly regarding pets accidentally consuming raw leaves or inhaling second-hand smoke from owners' recreational use.

Symptoms of Cannabis Toxicity in Pets:

  • Lethargy or agitation/restlessness
  • Abnormal heart rate (tachycardia or bradycardia)
  • Fluctuating body temperature (fever or hypothermia)
  • Muscle tremors, seizures, or dilated pupils
  • Vomiting and excessive drooling
  • Urinary incontinence

Symptoms typically manifest within 30–60 minutes of exposure and can last from 30 minutes up to 3 days. Cannabis contains two primary active compounds: CBD (Cannabidiol) and THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol). If a pet receives an improper dosage without expert veterinary supervision, it can lead to severe and potentially life-threatening side effects.

Expert Advice While cannabis is a major trend, it is not always suitable for pets. Dogs and cats process substances differently than humans. Always store cannabis products securely out of reach. If you are considering cannabis-based treatments for a sick pet, please consult a veterinarian first to ensure the highest safety standards for your beloved companions.
