The Danger Behind the Cuteness of Flat-Faced Pets

Flat-faced pets like Pugs, French Bulldogs, and Shih Tzus have a unique charm that many people fall in love with. But this cuteness comes with a health risk called BOAS, or Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome, which owners should understand in order to provide proper care.

What Is BOAS?

BOAS is caused by an abnormally short facial structure, which narrows the airway more than usual. This results in difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, and getting tired more easily than other breeds. This condition is common across all flat-faced breeds.

Common Symptoms

Pets with BOAS often have snoring-like noisy breathing, difficulty breathing especially during exercise or hot weather, tire easily, and in severe cases may faint or lose consciousness from lack of oxygen. They are also at higher risk of heatstroke than other pets, since they cannot cool down efficiently through breathing.

How Is It Diagnosed and Treated?

A veterinarian will examine the airway structure, possibly using endoscopy or X-ray to assess severity. In severe cases, corrective surgery may be needed, such as widening the nostrils or trimming excess soft palate tissue, to make breathing easier.

How to Keep Them Safe

Avoid strenuous exercise during hot weather, keep their weight under control since excess weight adds strain to breathing, keep their environment cool and comfortable, and watch closely for abnormal breathing. Seek veterinary care immediately if symptoms become severe.
