As summer arrives, the "King of Fruits"—Durian—is undoubtedly at the top of everyone’s must-eat list. Its rich, sweet, and creamy texture is so addictive that you might be tempted to share a piece with your furry companion. After all, fruit is healthy, right?
While durian is a fruit, it is packed with high levels of sugar, starch, and potassium. Overindulgence can lead to excessive calorie intake, increasing the risk of obesity and diabetes. More importantly, durian is considered a "heating" fruit. In the peak of summer, if a dog’s body cannot dissipate this internal heat fast enough, it could lead to Heatstroke.
The biggest risk is the durian seed. If your dog swallows it, it can cause a life-threatening intestinal obstruction or become a choking hazard. If you decide to give your dog a tiny taste, always remove the seed first.
Don’t panic! If your dog gulps down a durian pit, bring them to Thonglor Pet Hospital immediately. We offer Endoscopic Foreign Body Removal, a specialized procedure that allows our veterinarians to retrieve the seed from the stomach using a tiny camera and specialized tools—without the need for invasive abdominal surgery.
If you want a safer summer treat, try Bananas, Oranges, Strawberries, Mangoes, Apples, or Seedless Watermelon instead!
