It’s Not Just an Itch Understanding Ear Mites in Cats

Is your cat constantly scratching their ears or rubbing their cheeks? They might be battling Ear Mites (Otodectes cynotis)—tiny parasites that cause intense irritation and inflammation. These pests are common in kittens and can easily spread from mother to kitten, or even between dogs and cats.

Why is it Dangerous?

Constant scratching and violent head shaking can lead to Aural Hematomas (burst capillaries causing blood to pool in the ear flap). If left untreated, chronic inflammation can lead to the growth of polyps or painful blood blisters within the ear.

The Lifecycle of a "Mite"

  • The Egg Phase: Eggs take about 3-4 days to hatch into larvae.
  • The Juvenile Phase: The young mites live and feed inside the ear canal as they mature.
  • The Adult Phase: Once fully grown, they are ready to reproduce. An adult mite can live for about 2 months, continuing the cycle of irritation.

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Frequent scratching of the ears and cheeks.
  • Dark, crumbly discharge (resembling coffee grounds).
  • Tiny white specks moving in the debris. (Note: These are nearly impossible to see with the naked eye; a vet must use a microscope for a definitive diagnosis).

Treatment & Recovery

  • Professional Diagnosis: A vet will take an ear swab sample for microscopic examination.
  • Medicated Ear Drops: Specialized drops are used to kill the mites, combined with regular ear cleaning.
  • Environmental Cleaning: Sanitize your pet’s living area with disinfectant to prevent re-infestation and keep other germs at bay.
