Does Your Dog Show These Warning Signs? Understanding IVDD Risks

  • Unexplained Pain: Whining without cause, crying when touched, or yelping when changing positions.
  • Stiffness or Arching: A hunched back or stiff neck, depending on the location of the affected disc.
  • Weakness in Limbs: This can manifest as weakness in the hind legs, one-sided weakness, or weakness in all four limbs.
  • Decreased Activity: Reluctance to move, play, or jump as they normally would.
  • Panting and Restlessness: Heavy breathing, agitation, or sudden inability to stand or walk.

Why Early Diagnosis Matters

These symptoms are often mistaken for abdominal pain or respiratory issues. While IVDD can affect any dog, Chondrodystrophoid breeds (short legs, long bodies) such as Dachshunds, Pekingese, Shih Tzus, Lhasa Apsos, Beagles, and French Bulldogs are at significantly higher risk.

Success Rates for Treatment

  • Early Stage (Mild symptoms, sensation intact): The success rate for a full recovery after surgery is as high as 80–90%.
  • Late/Severe Stage (Loss of deep pain sensation or myelomalacia): Even with intensive treatment, the success rate drops drastically to 0–5%.

Do not wait. If you notice these signs, consult a veterinary neurologist immediately.
