Winning Over the "Local Boss" Expert Tips for Introducing a New Cat

Cats are notoriously territorial. When a new member joins the family, the "resident cat" often feels their kingdom is under siege. Get ready to play referee! However, if you follow these steps, your new and old "bosses" will settle in without holding a grudge.

  • Create a Safe Zone: When the new cat arrives, keep them in a spacious crate or a separate room. This allows them to adjust to the new environment safely. Use a thin cloth to cover the crate to reduce stress for the newcomer.
  • Scent Familiarization: Scent is a cat’s primary language. Place the resident cat near the newcomer’s area frequently. Try feeding them on opposite sides of a closed door or crate, or use the same grooming brush for both cats to blend their scents and build familiarity.
  • Controlled Meetings: This phase may take two weeks or more. Allow them to see each other while the new cat remains safely in the crate. Carefully observe the resident cat’s reaction; if things get heated, separate them immediately.
  • Repetition & Observation: Repeat these short, controlled meetings 3–4 times daily until the resident cat stops hissing and begins to show curiosity or even playful behavior.
  • Gradual Integration: Once they seem calm, you can let them interact freely. However, keep their resources separate at first—especially litter boxes, toys, and beds. Only share these once you are 100% sure they have bonded, evidenced by grooming or playing together.

It is natural for a cat to guard their territory and their favorite human! But with equal attention and a patient introduction, those initial "hisses" will soon turn into "purrs" and a lifelong friendship.
