2. Systemic Health Problems: Issues stemming from other organs, such as liver or kidney disease, diabetes, or respiratory tract infections.

Signs Your Cat May Have Dental Problems

• Foul mouth odor
• Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
• Oral ulcers or sores
• Excessive drooling
• Visible yellow or brown tartar
• Frequent scratching or rubbing of the face
• Watery eyes or nasal discharge (similar to cold symptoms)
• Facial or jaw swelling, or lumps around the neck/face
• Loss of appetite or reluctance to eat

Tools You’ll Need

• A flashlight
• A towel (for wrapping/restraining)
• Their favorite cat treats or liquid snacks

Step-by-Step Home Check

1. The Smell Test The simplest way! Try sniffing their breath while they are asleep to avoid any struggle.
2. Lip Check Gently lift the lips to inspect the front and side teeth. Do not force the mouth open immediately.
3. The Reveal Wrap your cat in a towel to prevent scratching. Gently tilt the head back (as if giving medicine) and use your other hand to carefully open the jaw.
4. Flashlight Inspection Use the light to look deep inside for redness, lumps, or broken teeth.
5. Reward Time Always give them a treat immediately after for being a good patient!
