No matter how round or fluffy your feline friend may be, their heart is surprisingly small—just about the size of a walnut. Cats are masters at hiding pain and discomfort. Often, heart conditions like Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)—the most common heart disease in cats—lurk silently. By the time we notice something is wrong, that tiny heart might already be overworked beyond repair. A heart isn’t like a favorite toy; it can’t simply be fixed or replaced. • Easily Fatigued: Getting tired quickly during play or needing longer rests.
• Rapid or Labored Breathing: Watch for heavy abdominal movement or "panting" while resting.
• Chronic Coughing: While coughing in cats has many causes, heart disease is a primary suspect.
• Pale or Bluish Gums: A sign of decreased oxygen levels in the blood.
• Sudden Back Leg Weakness: This can be caused by blood clots, a very dangerous complication of heart disease.
