Why Are Dogs and Cats So Afraid of Fireworks? Dogs have much better hearing than humans, able to perceive frequencies higher than we can, at around 67 Hz-45 kHz. To put it simply, when a loud sound occurs, humans hear it at a normal level and feel nothing much, but dogs hear it twice as loud as we do. Cats' hearing is even better -- up to 4 times better than humans.

 How to Help Your Dog Cope With Fireworks

By the time the fireworks start, your dog will be less startled and better able to control themselves, since they've already released their energy through exercise earlier in the evening.

 Train them to get used to loud sounds -- train your dog to get used to these sounds by playing them recordings frequently. You might start with quieter sounds and gradually increase the volume, repeating often. In the early stages of training, this should be done in a fully enclosed room to prevent your dog from getting startled and running off.
