As we enter the Christmas season, our feeds are often filled with adorable clips of cats climbing Christmas trees or dogs accidentally knocking them over. While these moments of mischief may look cute and funny, they hide a serious danger: the risk of electrocution from festive lights and wires. To keep your celebrations safe, we’ve put together a guide on how to handle an emergency if your pet gets an electric shock.

Symptoms of Electrocution in Dogs and Cats

  • Visible Burn Marks

  • Oral Lesions

  • Weight Loss Due to painful mouth sores, your pet may struggle to eat (Owners should carefully check inside the pet's mouth if they stop eating).

  • Neurological Distress Muscle tremors, seizures

  • Respiratory Distress

  • Cardiac Arrhythmia

  • Respiratory Arrest

First Aid Steps What to Do Immediately

  • Do Not Touch Your Pet

  • Cut the Power Source: Quickly turn off the main circuit breaker

  • Check Breathing Assess your pet’s breathing immediately. If they have stopped breathing, begin CPR as quickly as possible.

  • Seek Urgent Veterinary Care: Once CPR has been administered or the pet is stabilized, transport them to a veterinarian immediately for a full evaluation.

Our beloved dogs and cats are much like small children—they cannot tell us exactly where it hurts. If your pet gets an electric shock from playing too roughly, please do not be complacent, even if there are no visible external injuries. The best course of action is to take them to a veterinarian immediately for a thorough internal examination. Most importantly, remember to keep all electrical cords out of reach or tucked away on high surfaces where your mischievous friends can’t chew or play with them. Safety should always come first!
