Winter is coming... or is it?

We all know that a true winter in Thailand is quite a rarity. However, during this time of year, we might still feel a occasional cool breeze. These rapid fluctuations between chilly spells and midday heat can catch the immune system off guard—and our dogs are no exception. Even with their fur coats, they aren't "winter-proof." Today, we’re going to look at the common illnesses that tend to hitch a ride with the cooler weather, so you can keep your furry best friend safe and healthy.

  • Respiratory Tract Infections  Respiratory issues can range from self-limiting conditions to life-threatening illnesses. During winter, besides the drop in temperature, the wind acts as a major carrier for pathogens, leading to conditions such as the common cold, infectious pneumonia, and lung inflammation. Pet owners should watch for the following warning signs: lethargy, loss of appetite, nasal discharge, and difficulty breathing. If any of these symptoms occur, please take your dog to see a veterinarian immediately.
  • Hypothermia (Low Body Temperature) This condition occurs when a dog's body can no longer regulate its internal temperature within a normal range. This drop in temperature suppresses the central nervous system, which directly impacts heart function and the circulatory system.

Common Mistakes in Winter Pet Care

  • Skipping Bath Time : Many owners think, "It's cold, so my dog doesn't need a bath." This is a misconception. While you can reduce the frequency to once every two weeks, hygiene remains vital. Use warm water to keep them comfortable. Neglecting baths leads to the buildup of bacteria and fungi within the fur and skin, which can cause severe infections or skin diseases.
  • Keeping Them Cooped Up Indoors : While cold winds can cause respiratory issues, keeping a dog confined all day leads to stress—especially for active breeds. High stress levels suppress the immune system, making them even more susceptible to infections. Thailand's "winter" is rarely below freezing; it is perfectly safe to let them play outside. Just put on a cozy sweater or vest to keep their body temperature stable.
  • Thinking Food Doesn't Spoil in the Cold : Don't treat your house like a refrigerator! Some believe food stays fresh longer in cool weather and can be left out. To prevent diarrhea and food poisoning, you must provide fresh food and water daily. Always ensure their feeding bowls are cleaned regularly to prevent bacterial growth.

How to Care for Your Dog During Winter

  • Create warmth for your dog using simple methods such as providing cozy bedding, floor mats, or pet apparel. However, it is important to consider your dog's breed when choosing clothes. Some breeds have a high tolerance for cold weather and may only require thin, breathable fabric. Conversely, puppies and senior dogs, who struggle more with temperature regulation, should wear thicker clothing to provide extra warmth.

Even though Thailand’s temperatures do not drop to sub-zero levels like in other countries, we must remain proactive in protecting our pets. Prepare warm clothing and regularly monitor them for any warning signs, such as difficulty breathing, nasal discharge, or symptoms of the common cold. Early detection allows for immediate and effective treatment.
