• Dogs with skin conditions -- using human shampoo on a dog with a skin condition or sensitive skin will only worsen irritation or allergic reactions on the skin.

And if you run out of dog shampoo during an emergency, can you use human shampoo? Yes, you can, but it's best to use it only once in a genuine emergency, and look for a shampoo with a neutral pH as close to 7 as possible, or consider using baby shampoo instead. But we want to stress again -- only once, for genuine emergencies only!

How to Choose the Right Shampoo for Your Dog

• Choose based on skin and coat condition -- every dog has different skin, and some may have sensitive skin or existing skin conditions, so choosing a shampoo suited to your dog's specific skin condition is the safest option.
• Life stage -- puppies should be given a gentle shampoo suited to their delicate skin, to prevent irritation.
• Flea and tick removal -- if your dog has fleas or ticks, choose a shampoo containing ingredients that help eliminate them, as an additional measure alongside medication or keeping your dog's living area clean.
