IVDD in Dogs: Causes, Symptoms & Paralysis Risks

Intervertebral Disc Disease occurs when the disc -- the tissue located between the joints of the spine -- shifts and compresses important nerves responsible for movement and body function, causing pain in dogs, and in more severe cases, potentially leading to paralysis.

Causes of Intervertebral Disc Disease

• Running and playing on slippery surfaces
• Frequent running and jumping
• Allowing your dog to become overweight
• Running up and down stairs too quickly

This condition is commonly found in senior dogs or short-legged breeds, such as Shih Tzus, Dachshunds, and Corgis.

Risk Symptoms of Intervertebral Disc Disease

• Slower movement
• Lethargy
• Preferring to lie still and reluctant to move around often
• Hind limb weakness
• Dragging the legs while walking
• Crying out when the back area is touched

Treatment Approach

Treatment ranges from medication for dogs with mild symptoms, to surgery in cases with severe symptoms, to relieve compression of the spinal cord, or physical therapy to help with recovery.
