As a dog parent, have you ever closely observed the color of your pet's urine? I’m guessing many of you haven't! However, paying attention to this small detail can provide crucial diagnostic data for veterinarians. Today, Dr. Mark (Dr. Phurich), a veterinarian at Thonglor Pet Hospital, Rayong Branch, will explain which urine colors are normal and which indicate a potential health risk. 

Generally, healthy dog urine should be within the yellow spectrum, ranging from pale yellow to a deeper amber. Several factors can influence the exact shade, such as daily water intake, hot weather, or current medications and diet. Normal urine is typically a clear, pale yellow with little to no sediment. If the urine appears darker, it may simply indicate that your dog hasn't been drinking enough water lately.  

Abnormal Urine Colors in Dogs Red Flags to Watch For 

• Red : This often indicates issues within the urinary tract, such as bladder stones (urolithiasis), cystitis, or reproductive system disorders. It can also stem from blood-related conditions, such as certain blood parasites or severe muscle inflammation (myositis).

• Pale, Clear, or Colorless : Very diluted urine can be a sign of early-stage urinary tract issues, such as chronic kidney disease (CKD), or certain endocrine/hormonal disorders like diabetes or Cushing's disease.

• Dark Brown or "Coke" Colored : This is a high-risk indicator often linked to liver disease, gallbladder issues, severe blood cell destruction (hemolysis), or specific infectious diseases.

• Green or Blue : These unusual colors are typically found after a dog has ingested certain chemicals/toxins or is suffering from a specific type of bacterial infection in the urinary tract. If you notice these colors, seek immediate veterinary attention.

All the information mentioned above is just a preliminary guide. If you notice any abnormalities in your dog’s urine color, it is crucial to bring them in for a medical examination immediately.
