Ladies and Gentlemen, we would like to welcome all of our four-legged passengers aboard! Our flight is ready to depart for your long holiday getaway. Please ensure your seatbacks are in the upright position, fasten your seatbelts, and get ready for takeoff! But wait… before we head out on our adventure, let's take a look at the essential steps for bringing your beloved fur-babies along on a flight.

Domestic Pet Air Travel Requirements

  1. Pets must be in good health, free from illness, and not pregnant.
  2. Pets must be at least 2 months old.
  3. A valid Rabies Vaccination Certificate is strictly required.
  4. Pets must be housed in a kennel that meets international standards. The required dimensions are 55 x 37 x 30 cm (or 22 x 15 x 12 inches).

Detailed Specifications for Pet Travel Crates

  1. The crate must be spacious enough for the pet to stand, lie down, and turn around comfortably.
  2. The door must be sturdy and equipped with a secure locking mechanism to prevent the pet from opening it from the inside.
  3. The crate must be robust enough to protect your pet during takeoff and landing, with at least three solid sides for structural integrity.
  4. A clear and detailed feeding and watering instruction label must be attached to the side of the crate.
  5. The owner's name and phone number must be clearly displayed. Additionally, the crate should be marked with a “Live Animal” (or “Pet in Cage”) label, along with “This Side Up” arrows to ensure correct orientation.
  6. Occupancy : For safety reasons, only one pet per crate is permitted.

How Should Pet Parents Prepare for the Journey?

  1. Research Airline Policies : Each airline has different rules for pet travel. Some allow pets to sit in the cabin with you (provided they stay in their carrier), while others require them to travel in the cargo hold. Always review the specific regulations and procedures of your chosen airline.

  2. Advance Booking : Once you’ve selected your airline, remember to book a travel space for your pet in advance. Space is often limited and must comply with each airline’s booking requirements.

  3. Pre-flight Health Check : Take your pet to the veterinarian for a thorough examination. Ensure they are in good health, not pregnant, and free from any injuries or illnesses.

  4. Professional Consultation : Seek detailed advice from your vet regarding in-flight care. This is also the time to discuss if your pet’s breed is suitable for air travel. For example, Brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds are generally not recommended for flights as they may experience severe respiratory issues due to temperature changes and stress.

  5. Rabies Vaccination : Ensure your pet receives a rabies vaccination at least one week prior to departure (or as required by your destination).

  6. Document Preparation : Keep your pet’s vaccination record (Pet Passport) and personal identification information organized and ready for inspection.

  7. Crate Readiness : Prepare a travel crate that meets international safety standards (IATA compliant).

3 Ways Your Pet Can Travel by Air

  1.  Pet in Cabin This option allows your pet to fly inside the aircraft cabin with you.
    • Weight Limit: The combined weight of the pet and their carrier must not exceed 10 kg.
    • Availability: Only available on select airlines; please check with your carrier in advance.
  2. Checked Baggage (AVIH - Animal Vivant in Hold) Your pet travels in a specially pressurized and temperature-controlled compartment beneath the aircraft, designed for animal safety.
    • Requirements: Suitable for pets that weigh more than 10 kg.
    • Procedure: You must bring your pet to check in at the Passenger Terminal along with your own luggage.
  3. Unaccompanied Live Pets (ULP / Air Cargo) This method treats the pet as air cargo and is ideal for shipping animals when the owner is not traveling on the same flight, such as in international pet trade or moving a pet to a recipient at the destination.

    • Booking: Requires advance notification, as space for live animals is strictly limited.

    • Procedure: You must drop off your pet at the Airport Cargo Terminal.

    • Use Case: Primarily used for transporting dogs or other pets without an accompanying owner.

So, what do you think about our guide to flying with pets? It’s a perfect fit for the modern lifestyle of cat and dog lovers like us, isn't it? However, before you embark on your journey, please remember to contact your chosen airline directly. It is essential to double-check their specific requirements and get the latest updates on their pet travel policies. This ensures that you stay compliant with all regulations and, most importantly, guarantees the safety and well-being of your beloved pets throughout their flight."
