Listen to Their Heart: Diagnostic Procedures for Pet Heart Disease

"Heart Status" in pets is about more than just affection; it’s about the vital organ that powers their life. Heart disease can stem from structural abnormalities, functional impairments, or even congenital defects present from birth. Identifying the signs early is the key to effective management.

Watch for These Warning Signs

If your dog or cat exhibits lethargy, dry coughing, getting tired easily, weakness, or in severe cases, fainting/collapse, please consult a veterinarian immediately. These are common indicators of potential heart failure.

Diagnostic Procedures

Initially, the veterinarian will use a stethoscope to perform Auscultation, listening for irregular rhythms or heart murmurs. If an abnormality is detected, further advanced diagnostics will follow:

  • Electrocardiography (ECG/EKG): If the heart rhythm is irregular or the pet has a history of fainting, an ECG is used to record the heart’s electrical activity. Since every heartbeat is controlled by electrical impulses, any disruption in the graph can reveal underlying heart conditions.
  • Echocardiography (Heart Ultrasound): This non-invasive tool uses sound waves to create real-time images of the heart. It allows the vet to visualize the heart’s internal structure, valves, and blood flow for a precise diagnosis.
  • Chest X-ray (Radiography): A quick procedure that typically doesn’t require sedation. It helps the vet assess the overall size of the heart and check for signs of fluid in the lungs.
  • Blood Testing (NT-proBNP): This specialized test measures the level of NT-proBNP, a protein released into the bloodstream when the heart muscle is stressed or overstretched. It provides a clear snapshot of the heart’s current workload.

Take proactive care of your pet’s heart. Regular check-ups ensure your beloved companions stay by your side for years to come.
