If you’re rubbing your cat’s belly or scratching their back and suddenly stumble upon a "mystery lump" under the skin—don’t panic just yet! It’s natural to worry whether it’s just a harmless growth or something more serious like cancer. Today, let’s play "Junior Vet" for a moment and do a quick check-up to see which lumps are okay and which ones mean a trip to the clinic is overdue.
A lump isn't always "the C-word." What you’re feeling might be one of these:
Abscess: Often caused by a bite or scratch. It can feel soft or firm like a plug, and if it ruptures, pus will be present.
Lipoma (Fatty Tumor): Soft, movable under the skin, and slow-growing. Usually harmless.
Injection Site Reaction: Sometimes a firm lump appears after a vaccination. These usually resolve on their own after a while.
Cyst: A fluid-filled sac under the skin. It feels like a small water balloon and is typically painless.
Slow Growth: Stays the same size for a long time.
Texture: Soft, smooth, with well-defined edges.
Painless: Usually doesn't hurt when touched (unless it’s an abscess).
Movable: You can "wiggle" it around under the skin.
Rapid Growth: It gets noticeably bigger in just a week.
Texture: Rock hard, irregular edges, and feels "lumpy" or attached to the muscle.
Pain/Sores: May be painful to the touch or have an open sore/ulcer on top of the lump.
Fixed Position: Feels firmly attached or "rooted" in place; doesn't move when you touch it.
If you find a strange lump on your pet, don't keep the worry to yourself! It's always better to consult a veterinarian to be 100% sure. Your furry baby’s safety is the top priority.
